Ms Jennifer Bell, a mother of 4 was fined £580 for littering the street with a stick of cigarette. She initially denied throwing the cigarette off the window of her car.
Bell was apparently pictured throwing the butt from her window onto the floor of a McDonald’s car park. She denied littering and failed to refuse an initial fine of £75 which was sent to her home in Hull. She reiterated that she always gets her children to pick up after themselves if they drop rubbish in the street.
She ended up being summoned to court but she didn’t attend so was found guilty and sentenced in her absence.
Ms Bell narrated: ‘My best friend was in the car next to me. On the photos I had a cup of
tea in my right hand and it sounds stupid but I smoke with my right hand
and I had a cup of tea in my right hand too according to that photo.
‘I rang the council up and asked them if they had more proof. They
said that they couldn’t get CCTV so I just left it out on the side then I
got the court letters through. I was going to go but in the end I just
didn’t turn up.
She added: ‘I just think it’s ridiculous and I think the council are after any money that they can get.’
Councillor Martin Mancey, head of environmental services, said:
‘Fly-tipping is a criminal offence, and we will not tolerate it. We are
sick and tired of people who think they can just dump their waste
anywhere in our city. It’s hazardous to people, animals and the
environment.’
