Footballer Jermaine Pennant caused a stir when he asked what Brexit meant for England's participation in 'Euros 2018'.
He wrote: 'Now are not in Europe what's going to happen with the next euros 2018??? #eu'.
The
former Arsenal and Liverpool star was mocked mercilessly after he asked whether
leaving the EU could herald the end of England's role in the tournament. The ex-Liverpool player got his dates
muddled up - saying the competition would take place in 2018, instead of
2020.
It
wasn't long before Twitter pointed out his two mistakes: that the
competition will take place in 2018, and that the UK has voted out of
the EU, not the entire European continent.
The footballer then deleted the tweet, before responding that it was 'jokes' and describing the mistake as an 'absolute minor'.
In
2011 Pennant hit the headlines after leaving his Porsche at a Spanish
train station for three weeks – starting a story that he’s so rich, he
simply forgot he owned the supercar.
The UEFA European championship is known as the Euros. It takes place every four years, and is currently taking place in France.
England are due to play Iceland on Monday in the last 16 of the competition.
